song of the day: "why" by carly simon

carly simon's "why" was produced by chic's nile rodgers and bernard edwards for the soundtrack to a movie called the film bombed, which should be no surprise: you know your romantic comedy's a stinker when is your leading man. anyway, the song was a big hit in europe, but not so much in the US. it should have been a worldwide smash, though, as far as i'm concerned. it's a perfect hybrid of sad ballad and weird disco-reggae. sorry, that description makes the song sound awful, but it's actually really really great.

song of the day: "you're a lady" by peter skellern

peter skellern's "you're a lady" is one of those symphonic love songs that i'm a total sucker for. it was a hit in the UK in 1972. it's really pretty.

doesn't he look all prim, proper, and polite in his promo pic? i love it.

joy division movie trailer

while we're on the subject... there's been a lot of chatter, some of it not so great, about the upcoming film . it tells the story of ian curtis, joy division's lead singer. a trailer appeared on youtube a few days ago. looks pretty great to me. apparently, the actors really play the songs.

aw heck, let's listen to a song too.

oh man! you have to watch the whole thing and see who is at the end of this. it is hilarious!!

for some reason, kanye lures me back to sample-rich content-thin music sometime. maybe it has to do with stress and the need for something ridiculous, maybe it is that deep down i actually like the music. the video is pretty funny because he calls out all kinds of rap video hoes. you can see the video .

, by kanye and the game

but wait, there's more!! vida guerrera got angry since she was one of the hoes called out so she dropped the worst freestyle diss ever. sounds like mc sloppy joe at the 9th grade talent contest!

quarterbar vs. panther

if you haven't heard of , he's singer/beatmaker who makes fun, choppy jams. he's also an amazing performer. this pretty much shows you what he's all about. the blog has a hot new with a panther (re)mix by our boy . quarbz has mashed some of his beats with loops and snippets from panther songs. it's a dancey good time at 120 bpm and 7 minutes.

p.s. - you can grab a panther 7" single from or an lp from .

nice grooves magazine review of mmc/languis "split"

thanks for the , grooves!

MC Eriksolo’s cleverly incisive wordplay and cerebral flow are as finely honed as ever and act as the perfect foil for Quarterbar’s dark, blunted beats and atmospheric programming. Eriksolo’s delivery is as much indie rock as it is underground hip-hop, with its focus on metaphysical issues and the abstraction of interpersonal relationships. Quarterbar’s programming may take a cue from artists as diverse like, but the deeply personal nature of these meticulously constructed tracks allows them to seem far from derivative. These six brief pieces have certainly whetted this reviewer’s appetite for a (hopefully inevitable) full-length.
HOLLER!!!

fmrm

i was searching for this old mc serch aka michael berrin aka prince paul's friend aka tried to get into the beasie's but ended up getting the heisman from them aka host of the "white rapper show", clip where he talked about what he would write in his hair in his fade and then called out names from fake white rappers, but instead i found the clip from a video off of the soundtrack from 2000's "bamboozled." overall the movie was terrible but offered a nice foreshadowing and commentary on the state of media's obsession with exploitation and how it makes for "good tv." i think that savion glover getting shot by a group of militants didn't pack the punch that was needed for such a relevant message, but hey, has any spike lee joint ever had a good ending?! i mean, danny aiello throwing crumpled up money at mookie at the end of "," terrible. long live !!

man, if anyone knows what i'm taking about, thank you. here is the song that got me thinking:

, from 3rd bass featuring, yes!, nice and smooth

bjork brought her pixie-dusting, barefoot up-rocking, "zank you"-ing magic to town tonight and needless to say, it was amazing. who knew lazer light shows could be so awesome? she still has two shows left in nyc, but if you aren't going to either of them, you can still catch live broadcast of saturday's show starting at 8PM est.

i didn't record any audio or video at the show and you can easily find some of her new songs , so i thought i'd share one of my favorite older remixes, courtesy of the plaid dudes.
