google earth is amazing, but their current project to laser trace individual buildings is a slow process to give us 3d maps of our urban environments.
leapfrogging ahead of the pack, the swedish company c3technologies gives us a 3d map of the entire city of stockholm, using an algorithm of 60,000 photos. with this process, every building in the city is represented, as well as all of the trees and terrain. to make things more impressive, they’ve managed to squeeze this into a website that you can access and explore from an ordinary browser. and they made the whole thing happen in just three days!
read more about their technology here.
i’ve spent days scrolling around this page and am ecstatic at the possibility that this might become a widespread technology. enjoy.
