i really enjoyed this secondhand sureshots film by the good folks at dublab. it’s a documentary of four beatmakers who are each given $5 to buy thrift store records. they then each make a beat and talk about their process.

our pal graham has been busy lately. in addition to drumming for beach house on the road, he’s also the dude behind excellent remix/songwritin’ project roman ruins. he recently shared his “lover of mine” remix with us. it’s great. you can verify this below.

Watch a pre-NIN Trent Reznor covering “Eyes Without a Face” in the ’80s. his Billy Idol impersonation sounds like some random guy imitating Trent Reznor doing a billy idol impersonation. This was his band called The Urge, from right after he moved to cleveland from erie PA. Around 1985/86.

Also, who knew there was a NIN-specific wiki??

Playing any musical instrument well takes years of practice, but there’s something especially challenging about mastering the drums. Perhaps it is having to develop four-limb independence–for most grownups, after years of becoming reliant on our dominant hand, it’s nearly impossible to learn how to do four things at the same time.

Children are said to have better rhythm skills than adults. They love to dance and move whenever they hear a beat. This might be part of the reason why some kids learn to excel on the drums at a very early age. There’s something fascinating, wonderful, and totally demoralizing about seeing someone under age 10 playing better than I could ever dream to.
