story about beautifulpeople.net
On the surface, "you go, 'Oh, this is so lame.' But in some ways it is a great marketing opportunity," says Charlene Li, principal analyst at Forrester Research, a technology/market research company. Whether you're actually beautiful is beside the point, Li says; it's more about attitude. "Frankly, if you're a (legitimately) beautiful person, I'm not sure you want to be exposed in this way."i'm glad they already have a place for scary people like me.

fuel cell powered motorcycles coming soon
cnet/news.com reports today about the ENV fuel cell powered motorcycle. quiet but low powered (50mph tops) it reportedly gets 200 miles per tank and even less verifiably might cost $6000. kinda looks like a bicycle with farings to me. and it doesn't solve the problem of producing hydrogen cleanly. but its a decent start...

best video of the week
i don't know a thing about who these guys are but this video is my new favorite. they're called chromeo, and the song appears to be titled 'needy girl.' is it a joke? is it for real? all i know is i can't stop singing along with so many catchy hooks.

as a result of what i believe is a long-running legal dispute, prudential is auctioning off TVT assets including:
they're also selling the rights to television's greatest hits, the mortal kombat soundtracks (four of them!) and a slew of publishing rights. no cherry-picking, though; you have to buy the whole lot at once. mtvnews has some of the scoop.
All rights held by Lender to the following albums, EPs and singles and the sound recordings therein, subject to the terms of the Artist recording agreements and other applicable licenses, recorded during the approximate dates below:
Connells: 1987-1998; KMFDM: 1986-1999; and Nine Inch Nails: 1989-1992, including Pretty Hate Machine.

no more guilty pleasures. who isn't bored by people being embarassed by the the music they listen to? The good/bad news is that you are not a better person if you listen to music before it gets on the OC or sampled. You're just plain affected if you are living your life by what the music bullies think of you. so, consider this just a list of good songs.

another entry in salon's series about curing gays!
Barry Levy, a Christian counselor and licensed clinical social worker, is explaining to me what causes homosexuality. "Take the young boy who is more sensitive, more delicate, who doesn't like rough-and-tumble, who is artistic," he says. "He can't hit the ball, fire the gun or shoot an arrow. There is a high correlation between poor eye-hand coordination and same-sex attraction."

sarah vowell's speech that president bush should give. typical, not-laugh-out-loud but relevant, deep humor from ms. vowell.
wal-mart needs to chill, puff a doob
it's safe to say that willie nelson's new reggae album is probably pretty ungood. it's also safe to say that wal-mart is str8 lamerz. in anticipation of the retail giant's skittishness about things even remotely racy, universal music group traded willie's pot leaf cover art for a version that features a frickin' palm tree.

the muther f-wording saga continues. r. kelly hard at work on chapters 6-10 of his trapped in the closet epic. one, you, can only wonder how r. will deal with the news that his wife slept with the cop who gave him a ticket who somehow knows everyone else that has been sleeping with each other (including gay pastors).

Classical Tribute to Aphex Twin
The amazing 22-piece ensemble, Alarm Will Sound, realistically covers Aphex Twin. The complexity of the arrangements and the skill it takes to play this stuff is crazy. Check a sound clip or two.
want to release a product but afraid that piracy and the expense of distribution will make it completely unprofitable? try ransoming it. that's what daniel solis and greg stolze did with their game meatbot massacre. the result? they are $600 richer. listen to their story from on the media.

google maps: better and better
one gripe about google maps is it doesn't include a distance key for you to rough estimate travel distances. "sue and paul" have leapfrogged that problem with a route making pedometer (using google maps api). double click your waypoints and it gives you instant precision distances. check out the path around oakland's lake merritt. i also mapped the bike route from my old apartment to the tijuana border.

it's probably just me, but i am sadly amused by the vicious comments to tom hayden's reaction to the london bombings on the huffington post.
When are you going to meet with Zarqawi to plan strategy, like you did with the North Vietnamese? I look forward to your joint press conference.
enjoy these x-rated movie posters from the 60s and 70s. warning: nsf5 (not safe for the 50s).

steal wi-fi, get arrested?
[via huffington post]
In another Florida case, a man in an apartment complex used a neighbor's Wi-Fi to access bank information and pay for pornography sites.
But he slipped up. The man had sex products sent to his address. "The morning we did a search warrant, we found an antenna hanging out his window so he could get a better signal from his neighbor's network," Breeden said.

defamer estimates that tom cruise's antics cost war of the world about $187 million dollars in box office gross.
Using the same calculations that we employed to determine WOTW’s imaginary shortfall, we estimate that Katie Holmes’ involvement cost BB about $25 million this weekend. A pity.
an older, fun article about celebrity playlists called beyoncé, your mix tape sucks
[via the long tail]
Many of the artists involved play it snoozingly safe. For instance: There's an obscure little ditty out there called "Hey Ya!" Avril Lavigne and the Flaming Lips and Alice Cooper and Mischa Barton, star of The O.C., think you ought to give it a listen.

could it get any worse than this?

i mean really--would you live with fran by choice? my absolute worst nightmare. but hey...it features a supporting cast member who's a dead ringer for "charles in charge"-era scott baio...so it's got THAT going for it.
also. on my playlist this weekend: a minute-long just blaze beat snippet courtesy of mark ronson's show on east village radio. my name is BELIEVE and i like listening to unexpected fire.
