sally ride (and quarterbar!) introduce you to google sky

google earth, aka coolest program ever, just got better. click the "sky" button and the screen flips around to give you a detailed and informative perspective of your location's night sky. constellations, supernovas, galaxies and more, ready to be explored by all.

here's the preview video: watch as sally ride shows us a quick overview, and listen close to the sweet musical soundtrack provided by none other than mmc/sm maestro quarterbar.

(note: image above is not of quarterbar)

britney stands justin up on his proposed duet

lil' celeb gossip rag action for a thursday evening: news.com.au reports that justin timberlake has a duet written specifically for himself and ex-gf britney spears. plans were made, flights were booked, but then britney backed out with no explanation.

the sad sight of self-destruction is hard to watch.

exclusive: justin timberlake and britney spears: fake duet (mp3)

"he won't give me the $20 for the boltcutters, so i'm just gonna beat him down"

check this legendary recording of a phone conversation between two hardcore rockers in 1993. the conversation details the story of the removal of a boot from a car using giant boltcutters, beating up roommates, ultimate satanic metal bands, and all-time great guitar performances. it's long but worth listening to.

"walk hard" trailer. completely ridiculous.

this is a trailer for the new film walk hard. it's a parody of walk the line. it looks really absurd and funny.

the arctic monkeys and dizzee rascal

recorded at this year glastonbury festival - the arctic monkeys and dizzee rascal performs "temptation greets you like your naughty friend"

new meanest man contest single!!!

on the heels of their split lp with languis, meanest man contest is offering the public a new 7" single. check the free download of "throwing away broken electronics". it should adequately whet your appetite for more mmc. it's a good thing too because the record also features the hand-clap heavy "we wouldn't want it any other way", a hot remix by copy, and an acapella of "they do" for all you remixers. the good folks at gold robot records have done an amazing job putting the thing together. the cover art by casey jex smith is available in either green or gray. and don't worry if you're an ipod-only type of person, each record comes with a code for a free download of the digital version. it's all available for pre-order now!

check out gilbert arenas' weird blog on nba.com

no secret that this guy works at a different rhythm than the rest of the nba, but i finally took a few moments to read his blog today and it's brilliant. most of the stuff really comes from out of nowhere. he also thinks very highly of himself.

check out this entry in its entirety:
Larry Hughes Still Wears Wizards Practice Shorts
You know what’s funny about stuff like that? All players do that for some reason. You’ll catch Caron wearing Lakers shorts or Miami shorts. That’s just what players do. It’s just a pair of shorts. Throughout the year I’ve seen DeShawn Stevenson wear Utah shorts and Magic shorts and I’ve worn Golden State clothing from time to time. Since you collect it, you just end up wearing it.
cool, thank gil.

and this excerpt is pretty golden too:
Baron's Beard
It’s working for him. This is the old Baron.

I had a beard too this year but that was more of me being too lazy to go get a hair cut. Mine wasn’t really like shaped up, it was just there. His is all nice and trim. He takes his time with his.

yo! mtv raps pumas

i'm lovin these pumas featuring yo! mtv raps and old school rap personalities. there's doctor dre and ed lover, big daddy kane, doug e. fresh... but the m.c. shan ones are the best.

skateboarding is not a crime

in and effort to increase more respect for the law, psco stephen dean (whose beat is in lee-on-solent) has taken to the skatepark to learn to skate with the other skaters. it's a pretty good deal considering he's getting paid £40 ($79) for a one hour skate session. I hope this idea comes state side.

police unveil their latest weapon against crime - bobbies on skateboards

wtf? bearforce 1

the latest boy/man group to come out of the netherlands. i have a feeling the the dance routine in this will be mimicked across youtube.

master sessions: flea, chad smith & river phoenix

star licks master sessions with flea accompanied with chad smith and interviewed by river phoenix. flea talks about his love of music, influences, how he composes his music and how important the bass is to communicate your innermost thoughts and feeling. river looks somewhat interested in his really bad shirt.

check out the rest of the session: 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10.

the norwegian school girls "soon" mp3

if you're like me, you can't get enough of the sweet & sour sounds of aida, ophelia, and helene. i've extracted the audio from their amazing video. go ahead, put it on your ipod.

star wars gangsta rap video

star wars (and weird al) fans will appreciate this (apparently fan-made) video.

(thanks, bex.)

(almost certainly) the weirdest thing this guy has ever seen

when you stumble upon a small group of grown men in classic superhero costumes filming each other in the alleyway, that's pretty damn weird. don't worry, it only gets weirder.

check all the pics here. heads up, they're slightly nsfw if you're in a really stodgy office environment where your coworkers study the pages you are browsing.
(thanks, satt.)

more norwegian girl band awesomeness

when you take three norwegian schoolgirls who are a little tone deaf, don't have much rhythm or lyrical talent, and are just short of being hot, you'd expect to have a real turd of a band. and while you'd be right, it still somehow turns out as a marvelous piece of art.

listen as they recap the history of their friendship from year to year, leading to the sad moment when they have to grow and move apart. watch their video "soon."

(thanks, eric.)

giant lego man washes ashore

a 2.5 meter (roughly 8'1") tall legoman washed ashore at a dutch beach, promptly being claimed by a local resort and propped up in front of their drink stall.
A woman nearby added: "I saw the Lego toy floating towards the beach from the direction of England."
curiously, the torso of the legoman reads "no real than you are." this is a mystery that needs to be solved.

these metal bands never sold out

thetrukstop.com posts a wonderful list of bands, with info and vids, that have never lost sight of the meaning of true metal. classics like iron maiden, dio, slayer, and pantera all make good sense, while a few mentions were head-scratchers (who exactly is "strapping young lad?"). anyways, metal for life, right?

gmaps mashup for cell phone signal strength

a mashup of gmaps and user-contributed cell phone strength gives us signalmap. the bad news: t-mobile looks like it stinks all around my work area. the "good" news? so do all the other providers...

(thanks, gizmodo.)

helium-fueled hello, live by lionel richie

lionel's a good sport on this german talk show, agreeing to sing his classic song while huffing the helium from a balloon. nice to see him hamming it up.

one solution for all those leftover business cards

recycle, campfire kindling, ticker tape parade? all very basic compared to the level three menger sponge (a three-dimensional fractcal cube) this woman built. only took 66,000 cards and 600 hours to make. do your own!

fmrm - me and daniel dumile

it isn't as captivating as me and dupree, but whilst sweating away in ny i've been listening to a lot of mf doom. i've also been listening to a lot of iron and wine and pat benatar, too. i dont know if nike plans on doing a sam beam nike af1 or pat benatar nike dunk, but i think it might be a good idea. if you leave in weehawken, NJ, right now, boil your water and let's all be happy that they are only counting 5 critical casualties in minneapolis...

brian may turns in phd thesis after 36 years

after a 36 year break to pursue music, queen guitarist brian may returned to his astronomy studies and completed a 48,000 word thesis. his final requirement will be defending his thesis to an advisory board, which might not be too hard given his iconic status...
"I have no doubt that Brian May would have had a brilliant career in science had he completed his PhD in 1971," said astrophysicist Dr Garik Israelian, who worked with May in La Palma.

"Nevertheless, as a fan of Queen, I am glad that he left science temporarily," he added.
