stop the presses? – bad times for the print publishing industry

i was checking out a few news sites this morning and found a large crop of stories about how bad the troubles are that face the print publishing industry.

one of my very favorite magazines, radar, this week (it’s actually the THIRD time they’ve gone under, but this time it appears to be for good – things are so dead that contributing editor ana marie cox, who has been on the road covering the mccain campaign for the mag, has been stranded without additional travel funds and has resorted to taking paypal donations from fans to keep going).

all conde nast magazines have been required by their publisher to and trim other costs.

the 100-year-old newspaper christian science monitor has announced that it will become the first large newspaper to go .

rolling stone and other wenner media magazines this week, following similar layoffs by hearst magazines, time inc.’s southern progress corp., and mansueto ventures.

finally, meredith corporation’s 44%.

it’s a tough time for a variety of industries, but print is one for which the difficult investment climate that all businesses are coping with is being especially badly compounded by technology trends and changing tastes. as someone who will always enjoy physical media – and especially magazines – i hope that the smart people driving the print publishing industry are able to innovate in ways that allow them to complement their traditional businesses with new ones that both meet consumer demands and allow them to keep their presses running.
