and those names are architects oscar newman and alice coleman, who design these anti skate devices for public spaces. named ““, the idea is to control delinquency and crime through environmental design.

i don’t think of this as evil. just logical. it just makes good sense. it amazes me that skatable new buildings and business parks continue to spring up without these protections. fools! i used to skate embaracadero and it was the best. it was the closest thing to a skate park that we had. now there are tons of skate parks in the bay area. there will always be unintended spots, though. it’s fun to find your own.

i actually deal with this with many of the public projects that i work on. a main concern is that skating has the tendancy to take over a space making it unusable for anyone other than skaters. also, it can obviously be destructive to the benches, walls, etc. that said, i’m not necessarily for the use of the deterrents b/c, in my opinion, they end up being far more unsightly than the scrapes and scratches. it’s a tough call, but i do see both sides.

on my first trip to sfc from blighty (britain) i got to skate embarcadero too, it was a big deal for me as i’d seen photos of some of my favourite skaters there. i loved/love street skating, parks were always so territorial. street skating for me was about exploring and using your surrounding concrete environment. i was maybe a little general in hatred towards this; a well designed space is a lot different to these after thoughts. I guess the 15 year inside me is still screaming “skate or die!”.
