christopher walken, evil ping pong enthusiast

an evil mastermind who also loves ping pong? that’s right up christopher walken’s alley. the movie is called and in case you’re wondering, it’s indeed a comedy, written by two of the guys who do reno 911. filming starts in june. sounds perfect.

jazz dump

i’ve been converting some of my fave jazz records to mp3s. it’s been fun. straightfoward and enjoyable stuff. here’re some selections…

from the kicker. 1967. milestone.

from happenings. 1966. blue note. hutcherson plays vibraphone. he was only 25 when this came out.

from doors. 1972. cobblestone. slow, moody stuff from the blind saxman.

from natural essence. 1969. blue note. washington’s lead sax playing makes this record really excellent. there is almost no info about this guy online. it’d be nice to see a full discogrpahy. he wins the age contest by being only 23 when this record came out.

This guy looks like Jennifer Love Hewitt?

I came across this interesting article from less boring new service, . The article is about an interesting new site called . The site does more than match your looks with a hot celebrity, it seeks “to make it easier for people around the world to use the power of the Internet to discover their heritage and strengthen their bonds with family and friends”…blah blah blah now go see which celebrity you look like!

r.i.p. nikki sudden

died way too young yesterday. aside from his solo work, he was a member of swell maps and the jacobites. let’s take a listen.

i saw play last night at in san francisco. the band is and after seeing them play, it makes even more sense. best show i’ve seen in a while. the songs are very simple. mostly acoustic guitar-driven and augmented by sparse drums, xylophone, piano, and bass. the lyrics have a sweet kind of pessimism with repeating themes of wind, being carried, royalty, cherubs, and dogs. it’s all delivered with a rapturous energy. a is coming out. highly recommended.

going on tonight in san francisco

firefox lets you spot and avoid riaa music on amazon

the firefox extension is pretty sick. quarby was showing me the wild things it can do, like find any mp3 file linked on a page and display a flash player next to it so you can listen to it embedded on the page. ( has all the greasemonkey scripts you could ever dream of, including the mp3 player).

the site has a great writeup about installing and configuring greasemonkey so it will alert you of any riaa music on amazon, in case you’re trying to avoid supporting the riaa’s heavy-handed tactics (drm, analog hole, etc etc). cool way to get the most from the “internet experience.”

old releases are back in stock!

like opening a treasure chest of spices and jewels, we’ve found a few more copies of the wesh classic by forest fires collective – “you can’t see” — it’s up in the sneakmove store along with the meanest man contest/jim yoshii pileup split 7″ (which you NEED to own–can you believe it’s only $3?), minicomp (crazy secret-we’re almost out!) and rock drum breaks cd. and more to come so check back soon!

it’s not new news that is back together, but i’m finally going to get to see them play next month. in honor of this, let’s enjoy the video for . if you don’t have green mind or you’re living all over me, it’d be a really good idea to .

had a nice post the other day about “post-punk”. among the mp3s posted was a great track by a scottish band called . super good. from their 1981 album author! author!. they alternate between a melodic, floaty verse and a dissonant, stabby chorus. maybe like wire meets flock of seagulls.
