sony drm infection map

the bastards at sony have been in big trouble lately. "copy protection software" secretly installs itself when users put certain sony music CDs in their computers. the software is a drm ("digital rights management" system) that uses a rootkit to gain install permissions on computers. this has a scary map of how far the drm has spread.

This whole this is really incredible to me. Talk about a huge clusterfuck.

Seems like they should publish a list of the rootkit CDs, so people know not to buy the ones that are still on the shelves.

I was actually going to buy a newish Sony title, and now I'm worried. Are the CDs with the protection even marked in any way?

Halfway-
. Bad news-that new Ricky Martin you were eyeballing is a no-no.

I read earlier today that there were something like 42 infected titles.

To make things worse, the latest reports going around are that the software fix that Sony has offered actually causes even MORE problems than the original DRM mess it's trying to solve. Nice one, Sony!

Great link. Thanks a million, now I know what to look for.

p.s. I'm just glad this came out into the open before I got a nasty surprise in my new Scott Stapp solo CD.

Another interesting observation from that article is how EVERYONE in England loves all the crappy new Sony releases, but in rural France, they're not selling so well. I think a marketing focus group is in order.

this is exactly the kind of story that gets me creeped out about "music rental services."

DRM sux, and i'm not saying that because i want to steal music.
