i was checking out a few news sites this morning and found a large crop of stories about how bad the troubles are that face the print publishing industry.
one of my very favorite magazines, radar, this week (it’s actually the THIRD time they’ve gone under, but this time it appears to be for good – things are so dead that contributing editor ana marie cox, who has been on the road covering the mccain campaign for the mag, has been stranded without additional travel funds and has resorted to taking paypal donations from fans to keep going).
all conde nast magazines have been required by their publisher to and trim other costs.
the 100-year-old newspaper christian science monitor has announced that it will become the first large newspaper to go .
rolling stone and other wenner media magazines this week, following similar layoffs by hearst magazines, time inc.’s southern progress corp., and mansueto ventures.
finally, meredith corporation’s 44%.
it’s a tough time for a variety of industries, but print is one for which the difficult investment climate that all businesses are coping with is being especially badly compounded by technology trends and changing tastes. as someone who will always enjoy physical media – and especially magazines – i hope that the smart people driving the print publishing industry are able to innovate in ways that allow them to complement their traditional businesses with new ones that both meet consumer demands and allow them to keep their presses running.
well, finally did something pretty great and made a clean, searchable with tons of new and old videos. it’s clearly a response to the sharing culture that’s grown out of youtube. at first look, it’s great. check a classic:

the fine people that run sneakmove take your viewing experience very seriously. so, it is frustrating to discover that this site is not formatting well on internet explorer 6. you know, the version that was initially released in 2001 and apparently last updated in 2004. the web browser which has been . not software, not application. of all tech products ever, ie6 is the eighth worst.
we’re working on fixing the problems, but trying to avoid patches that would create unnecessary bloat and possible issues for the 90% of the readers on other browsers. so in the meantime, we’ll do our part to help encourage the ie6 world to upgrade their browser.
here’s a list:

if you’re stuck in an office with locked machines, then our apologies. we’ll fix this as fast as we can.
our good pal colin has been up to some really awesome stuff, like working on the dvd special features for , and the recent blu-ray release of .
in the extras section of the apocalypse now disc, there’s a segment about how dolby engineers pioneered the 5.1 surround sound system to help moviegoers enjoy this movie and the first star wars. it’s very interesting and informative. also edited by our pal colin. nice work dude.
sneakmove’s absolute superduper homie tim molloy has written a terrific comic novel entitled . it’s being published by the fine virgin books house o’ terrific novel publishing and will be unleashed to satisfy the appetite of voracious readers tomorrow, october 28. we here at “the move” secured an advance copy of the book a few weeks ago and we can vouch for it like nobody’s business. it’s a great, fun read that centers on a tv news producer who goes undercover to expose workplace violations at a mexican fast food restaurant chain. it’s much more nick hornby than eric schlosser, so if you’ve already had your fill of disgusting descriptions of people losing limbs in meat grinders, don’t worry – you’ve got nothing to worry about with this one. in fact, the only part of the human body that suffers any damage in how to break bad news is the main character’s heart, which is broken a few times (see cover).
again, this one’s a ton of good times and we couldn’t recommend it more highly. we urge you to either buy it on or request it from the nerdy, cute girl working the register at your favorite locally-owned bookstore today.
to celebrate the release of how to break bad news, a good gang of folks including and have created an that features saturday night live alum and the very lovely and hilarious comedians and portraying some of the book’s main characters.
i’ve been watching , the documentary about the great folk/rock/psych band, love. it’s viewable at pitchfork.tv for the next week*. these guys have an insane and wonderful tale to tell. i highly recommend checking it out if you’re a fan of . the dvd is .
*just change the number of the chapter to keep watching.
every tuesday for the next four weeks we’ll visit with ryan, the creative force behind , and take a peek into the diary of his album recording process.

6 songs – 4 weeks – 8 tracks
Post two: Tracking
In my last recording diary post, I listed out the equipment and influences that inspired me to create something on my own. Now lets get into . Tracking out songs on your own can either be incredibly fun, or incredibly frustrating, and as a rule of thumb, remember that if your mood starts to sour… if you jumped into everything with just a cup of coffee but didnt get that breakfast burrito, STOP. Take a break, and come back to it. It’s also a lot better on your ears if you take the headphones off every 15 or 20 anyways, and that’s important, because they are all you have for mastering.
