they say one of the hardest things to do in the art world is designing fonts.

try it for yourself online with fontstruct. create, download, share your font creations.
not sure how detailed they get (can you add little lines to make gothic/old english style fonts? from the gallery, it looks like you can get pretty advanced). Looks awesome no matter what.
