spotlight on baltimore urban decay

using the amtrak as a platform to show disrepair away from the glitz of our financial centers or the cush of the suburbs, “scott” has built a blog about scenes of urban collapse. the ruins in baltimore are the worst i’ve seen personally but the phenomenon of trains traveling through (causing?) areas of disrepair holds a lot of fascination and provides some intense images.

the other night i watched “boys of baraka” with my gal pal. it’s a documentary about a group of 6th grade “at risk” boys from baltimore that attend school in kenya. the push is to get these kids to graduate high school. it’s amazing how smart some the kids are, and how disappointing their situation is.

interesting… anyone remember how vibrant west oakland used to be before the bart train rail(s) got put up? i was too young, but i,ve heard the stories from people when i used to live in north oakland. arguably it was the bart train that jump started the “urban decay” in that part of oakland (and caused many people to leave the area… hence the nickname: “ghost town”). and to this day that part of the town remains largely falling apart and boarded up. not on the scale of baltimore, but still…
